Police investigate attempted armed robbery in Sunderland

Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempted armed robbery at a convenience store in Sunderland.

They were called to Londis on Lincoln Avenue shortly before 06:30 on Thursday.

It was reported that a man entered the shop and threatened staff with a knife.

The staff chased him out of the store after refusing to hand over money and he fled in the direction of Westgate Avenue.

Nobody was injured during the incident but a member of staff was very distressed.

Police are searching for the suspect who is described as white, in his 20s and dressed entirely in black at the time of the incident.

After viewing CCTV, officers are also trying to trace the driver of a dark coloured vehicle who exchanged a few words with the suspect after the incident and drove down Lincoln Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
